Lei Material Production

Pilale Bay Farms grows foliage and plant materials used for lei-making and traditional cultural practices across Maui. These plantings are integrated throughout the farm as part of our diversified agricultural system and are managed for long-term production.

Current plantings include kī (ti) varieties, plumeria, dracaena foliage, kamani, schefflera, and other plants commonly used for lei and cultural decoration.

Expanding Local Supply

Demand for locally grown lei materials continues to grow, and much of the foliage used on the island is limited or brought in from outside sources. Pilale Bay Farms is expanding its material plantings to increase the availability of locally grown options for the Maui community.

New areas are being established and existing plantings are being organized and managed to support seasonal harvesting over time. The goal is to develop a reliable local source of foliage and plant materials grown and maintained on Maui.

Supporting Cultural Practice & Resource Stewardship

These materials are grown to support cultural practitioners, nā hālau, lei makers, and community members who rely on locally sourced plants for ceremonies, events, and daily cultural use.

By increasing farm-grown supply, the project also helps reduce pressure on native forests and wild gathering areas, supporting the long-term health of these natural resources while keeping traditional practices connected to the land.
