Restoring the Land: From Plantation to Agroforestry
Pilale Bay Farms is located on land we have been working and cultivating for over 50 years. The property was purchased when the current owner was born, after the former pineapple fields had been taken out of production and the land had gone fallow to grass. Soon after, his father passed away, and his mother, Mary, raised four young children on the land. Food plants were established out of necessity to help feed the family, while ornamental and flowering plants reflected her love of nature and her vision for creating a living landscape around our home.
Over the years, many of these plantings spread naturally through seed, volunteer growth, and occasional care. What began as a family homestead gradually developed into a diverse mix of food crops and plant materials shaped by decades of living on and working with the land.
Today, Pilale Bay Farms is the next step in that long story. The farm is actively managing and expanding these existing resources into organized production, with a focus on increasing local food availability and supporting the Maui community. The work centers on bringing structure, care, and long-term management to a landscape that has been growing and evolving for generations.
Mary's Memorial Orchard
Following Mary’s passing in 2025, a dedicated orchard was established in her memory. This memorial orchard reflects the vision that shaped the land—one rooted in nourishment, beauty, and continuity—and serves as a reminder that the land should provide for future generations.
Pilale Bay Farms continues to grow as a working agricultural operation, carrying that vision forward through a long-term commitment to the land and to increasing the amount of food produced for the people of Maui.
Pilale Bay Farms operates as part of All Maui Tree Care LLC. Organic material from tree care operations is returned to the land as mulch and soil-building resources, supporting soil development while keeping green waste in productive local use.
